FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between a celebrant and a registrar?

As a celebrant, I can create a completely bespoke ceremony just for you. It can include religious and spiritual content, any choice of music, vows and promises of your choosing, including ones you write yourself. You can have your ceremony any time of the day or indeed night (within reason) and at any venue / location, as long as we have the permission of the owner. I work with you to craft your ceremony and you can have as much contact with me as you like in the build up to the ceremony.

A registrar is a council employee who is responsible for keeping legal records. The ceremony conducted by a registrar must be in a licensed venue and has to contain specific  declarations and legally binding words, and it forms a legally binding marriage. A registrar cannot have any religious or spiritual readings in their ceremony and the ceremony content itself is very limited. You are likely to only meet your registrar a few moments before your ceremony.

How much does it cost?

Fees start at £375 for naming ceremonies and fees start from £575 for couple ceremonies.  My fees are fully inclusive of the ceremony planning and delivery as set out in my ‘Making it happen’ section.

If you wish to have a scaled down micro-ceremony, or a particularly simple ceremony, we can discuss special prices in these circumstances.

  • Is your ceremony location further than a 10 mile radius from my home?  Additional travel is charged at 55 pence per mile.
  • Having a symbolic ritual / mini ceremony and would like me to source the items?  I will add the cost of these to your fee.
  • Am I required to stay away overnight?  Travel, accommodation and reasonable subsistence costs would also be charged, and we would always  discuss and agree these during our free, no obligation discovery call.

Any additional expenses agreed will be clearly laid out in your booking form and contract.

How do we book?

After your free discovery call, if you decide to book me, I will send you my booking form which will outline my terms of service and the full cost for your ceremony. I will hold your date for five days after the booking form has been sent.

Payment of the non-refundable deposit within the five days, will secure your date.

When do we pay?

You pay a non-refundable booking fee of 30%: This payment ensures that your date is reserved. I guarantee not to take another booking for the same day.

You then pay 50% of the balance when I complete the draft ceremony. This payment ensures that I am paid for the hours of work I will have undertaken to meet with you and write the first draft of your ceremony. There will be further revisions required to the draft, and there is no limit to how many reasonable revisions may be required to perfect it for you.

The remaining balance is due 28 days prior to your ceremony.

Are you qualified and are you insured?

Yes, I trained with Civil Ceremonies Ltd, and hold the Diploma In Celebrancy for Couples and Naming Ceremonies.

I am also trained to conduct Hand-fasting Ceremony and I’m an approved practitioner with the Sacred Celebrants Academy.

I am fully insured through the Civil Celebrant Connection (CCC), of which I am a member. I hold Enhanced DBS Clearance, and I undertake regular professional development to make sure I am always at the top of my game!

Will I get to meet you before the ceremony?

Absolutely! Meeting before the ceremony is a priority for me, and whenever possible, our first meeting will be at your chosen venue. This as a collaborative, joyful journey every step of the way. Whether you prefer frequent check-ins or just a few touch-points, we’ll have ample opportunities to connect. If distance or other exceptional circumstances prevent us from meeting in person beforehand, we’ll arrange video calls, virtual site visits, and rehearsals to ensure everything runs smoothly on the day. Rest assured, I’ll make sure we have ample time for a face-to-face meeting on the big day before the ceremony begins.

How much involvement do you need from us once we have booked you?

Just enough to make your ceremony truly yours.

I’ll do all the heavy lifting, but because every ceremony I create is completely bespoke, I’ll need your involvement at key stages. We’ll begin with a relaxed planning meeting and questionnaire, giving me everything I need to tell your story beautifully. I’ll then write your first draft for you to review, and together we’ll refine it until you’re completely happy.

The most memorable ceremonies are always a collaboration. I’ll take care of the writing, structure and guidance, while you bring the memories, personality and feedback that make your ceremony authentically yours. Together, we’ll create a ceremony that’s personal, engaging and a true reflection of you both.

Are there any limits on where and when we can have my ceremony?

The great thing about having a celebrant is you can have your ceremony pretty much anywhere, anytime, and doing anything, as long as it is safe and comfortable for all involved. So, think outside the box and chase your dream location as you won’t need any special licence.  As long as you have permission from the venue or site owner, we can go ahead!   If you do choose an outdoor location, we will need to plan for unpredictable weather.

Who will you conduct a ceremony for?

Anyone and everyone! Love knows no bounds, and ceremonies are for everyone. Inclusiveness is a core value for me, and I am dedicated to creating ceremonies that embrace and celebrate all forms of diversity, culture, heritage, beliefs, and identities. Every love story is unique, and I am passionate about honouring that uniqueness in each ceremony.

Will you travel to perform ceremonies?

Yes.  I am based in Northamptonshire and I travel across the county, the surrounding areas,  and anywhere in the UK and beyond for your ceremony.  Let me know what you have in mind and let’s see what I can do.

Can you legally marry us?

No. The celebrant-led ceremony is not legally binding but it is where you get to have exactly what you want and to reflect your own personalities and aspirations.  Celebrants cannot legally marry you in the UK at this time.

Many couples now choose to split the legal and ceremonial parts of their wedding.   You can opt to complete the simplest legal process at your nearest Registry Office, saying your declaratory and contracting words, and obtaining your marriage certificate / civil partnership certificate. This costs around £60 depending on the location and you will need two witnesses.

Then you are free to hold your separate celebrant-led wedding / civil partnership celebration ceremony, where you invite your family and friends; bespoke, personal and without restrictions! You can exchange promises/ vows and rings and sign a commemorative certificate if you wish.  Often guests are unaware that it is not the legally binding ceremony.

Can we write our own vows / promises? Can these be kept private until the day?

Yes!  Your vows and promises can be You-niquely Yours. And if you would like ideas and support with that, I can help with that too. If you wish to keep these private from each other until the big day, that’s absolutely fine, and if you would like, I can meet with each of you separately to help write these.

Can children be involved?

Absolutely, let’s get them involved! Any children can be involved as much or as little as you would like. We can find a suitable role / contribution for any age and ability.

Can pets be involved?

Of course!  As long as we have permission from the venue / site owner, let’s get them involved! There are many wonderful ways in which pets can be present and even involved in your ceremony.

Can we have a themed ceremony?

Absolutely! I love themed ceremonies and I am easily persuaded to dress up, or dress to match your colours and vibe!

Do you conduct micro-ceremonies?

Yes, I can offer micro-ceremonies.  These smaller, more intimate ceremonies, are for you and a small circle of up to 20 guests.  Fees for micro- ceremonies can start from £350.
